If you asked me how I wanted to spend my 33rd Birthday it would consist of guzzling some wine somewhere at a beach in Puerto Rico or even just on my couch! But on my 33rd Birthday, just as I suspected, my 3rd child was born. Way past her due date and my fastest delivery ever, she waltzed into my life PERFECTLY.
I was due May 24th…about 2 days before, on a Friday, I woke up with contractions, I was sure I was in labor. After spending about 4 hours in the ER I was sent home because my contractions had “stopped” and I was only 1 centimeter dilated. I honestly don’t know why if I was in pain and overdue why they didn’t just get the show going already. But I was sent home. The next day I stood home all day. I was afraid if I even went to the supermarket I’d give birth there. On Sunday I decided I was not going to stay home just waiting so we all went out. We went out shopping practically all day. I WALKED A LOT!!
The Waiting Game
I kept getting contractions here and there but nothing too crazy. The next morning, Memorial Day and My Birthday I woke up feeling ODD. Not my normal self. Pain here and there but again nothing too crazy. After using the bathroom I noticed a lot of discharge (sorry I know TMI) I knew already my body was preparing for labor. It continued all day… the pain and the discharge. Literally ALL DAY. I did not leave my house at all. I told myself, once I see blood, I’ll just head out or if the contractions get too unbearable. With the hospital being almost an hour away from my home I didn’t want to head out and then get sent back home.
As the day went on I tried to eat as much as I could because we all know that once you’re in labor and in the hospital, they will NOT let you eat. We grilled for dinner and my contractions began to get more painful. I downloaded an app to track them and after tracking them for a few, it told me to prepare to go to the hospital. I still wasn’t budging. Just by looking at me my mother in law told me I was going to have the baby that day. I just tried to remain calm. After attempting to go nap in the room and being woken up by my contractions I decided it was time to go.
“I Think My Water Broke”
We get to the hospital parking lot (ahhhh we meet again!) and Hommy starts getting out the car and he’s looking at me, I’m guessing wondering why I’m not jumping out the car… I tell him “I can’t” “I can’t get out!!!” He runs to my side to help me out and as I’m walking, after I take a few steps out the car I feel a rush of water (I’m joking I swear it felt like PEE) coming out of me! He looks at me, I look at him, and I say “I think my water just broke!, That or I peed MYSELF…!!” He didn’t know what to do….. there I was in the middle of the hospital parking lot with a stream of pee gushing out of me!!!!!
(my water has never broken in any of my pregnancies)
To be honest with you all I thought was “My Sandals Are Ruined! The sandals I couldn’t bear paying $22.99 at TARGET for are fucking ruined!” So that’s what I said out loud! “My Sandals Babe!’ and we laughed as I waddled my way into the hospital….also hoping PINTEREST would tell me how to get this pee or whatever it is off of them once I have this baby!
I walk in and after taking all my info they tell me to step on the scale! REALLY? So I’m like “DUDE I just peed all over the floor outside and I’m in pain….do you really want me to go on a scale?” Obviously it was a must….after that they rushed me upstairs. Once we got to my room, my contractions went from bad to worst really fast.
The Shot
Even though this is my 3rd baby….contrary to what the nurses, the doctors, YOUR HUSBAND or anyone else may think, it’s fucking bad!!! There were moments I felt I couldn’t even breathe!! When the nurse checked me I was 3-4 centimeters dilated. I thought that was pretty quick, but NOT knowing how long it would take me to fully dilate, I asked for the Epidural.
Do you believe I had to watch a video before they could give me the shot? The video felt like it was 2 hours long!! Luckily the anesthesiologist got there in no time!! Even as he was there I felt like it was time to push but my doctor was not there so the nurse kept stalling.
I could barely even sit up to get the shot. After I finally sat up and he was able to finish, I layed down and felt the urge to push. I kept telling the nurse “She’s Coming!” I could tell she did not want me to even try to push since my doctor wasn’t there and the anesthesiologist was still asking me if my legs were numb. THEY WERE NOT. He wasn’t able to fully put it through because once my doctor strolled in (from a DATE all dressed up LOL).
I felt another urge to push. And after 2 or 3 pushes, (an hour and 59 minutes after we arrived) at 9:59 pm, Jayla James Torres arrived. Weighing 7 lbs 14 oz and with a head full of hair, they placed my tiny, quiet, beautiful daughter on my chest with whom I now share my birthday.
I cannot begin to explain to you how beautiful the moment they lay your child on your chest really feels. One minute you’re screaming in pain and the next you have another tiny person in your arms. It’s just incredible. You look back at the pain, the morning sickness, the 9 months, the anxiety you feel waiting to finally meet this little person and once you finally lay eyes on them, it’s LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT.

And just like that, on the day I turned 33, I became a mom of 3. It’s going to be crazy but I’m thankful for this blessing and excited for this beautiful journey. As always, thanks for reading!
